With Safari 4 released by apple many would like to try using this browser, likewise I too jumped into the fire and tried my hand at the new Safari 4.

The browser has a nice dose of the eye candy, the Cover Flow, the visual History pretty much the browser version iTunes.
Leaving the eye candy aside and talking about functionality one thing that hindered me from using the browser was the feature Sessions that we have in Opera and also chrome. In fact I was once a die-hard fan of Firefox but thanks to a buggy PC that crashed any time it wanted I kept loosing bookmarks and all the tabs that were open while browsing.

Opera pretty much saved me while that PC lasted, now Opera has pretty much become my default browser and no browser seems to take me away from it. Although Chrome a browser from Google though seems to have caught my fancy, the simple Ui and the “Most visited” feature is quite attractive.

Getting back to Safari 4, Chrome and Safari use the same application framework the Webkit even though there is one feature missing in Safari 4 which is included in Chrome. A feature that restores all the tabs that were open the last time you closed the browser. This feature is very important to me since I being an avid surfer, surf in quite deep into the web and by the end of the day have quite a bunch of tabs opened, not wanting to bookmark them all I prefer keeping them open in Opera and after shutting down the PC I can get all those tabs back.

Now this same feature is missing in Safari 4 and hinders me from using it, however being really wanting to try this browser I did not give up and ended up with a nice trick which although wont replicate the Opera or Chrome feature.

Now keeping apart the new tabs being added each session, people now a days definitely have a few default websites they always open when they open up their browser. Chrome has a nifty feature for such users whereby a grid of 3×2 shows all your frequently used websites show up. Opera too has such a feature but this needs to be done manually i.e you need to manually add the sites you frequent the most. So in Opera I keep about 4-5 tabs open by default, these tabs then reopen when I load the browser.

As said before this feature is missing from Safari 4, so what if you want such a feature. Well fear not how about a trick that could emulate this feature in Safari 4.

Well here goes, open Safari click the Gear Icon on the right side and select “Show Menu Bar”, the Menu Bar now appears. Click on Bookmarks and click “Show all Bookmarks”, now in the Bookmarks window that appears click on the “Bookmark Bar” option on the left column. Here delete all those default bookmarks (seriously nothing that these bookmarks needs to be relished about, you can always copy them to a bookmark folders just in case you want them).

Bookmark Window

Now type in the website URL in the address field wait until it is loaded, now click on the “+” icon in the address field, a pop up will appear asking you where to save your bookmark, save it under “Bookmark Bar”. Like wise add all the frequent website you like visiting. You can check all these bookmarks by clicking the Bookmark option on the menu bar you activated earlier.

Bookmark Add

Now being done with the bookmark additions to the bookmark bar, go to the gear icon again, click “Hide Menu Bar” (Unless you need it you can skip this step). Clicking on the gear icon again, click preferences, under the general tab select “Tabs for Bookmark Bar” click the close button, now whenever you open your browser again all these saved bookmarks from the bookmark bar will get loaded by default, viola although a longer process this pretty much replicates the options from Opera or Chrome.
